Porto Alegre

Southern Brazil’s most important port is a progressive city that’s still managed to preserve much of its elegant neoclassical architecture.

About

Located on the shores of the Logoa dos Patos, Porto Alegre was established in 1752 by 60 Azorean couples. Since then, it’s grown into one of Brazil’s largest cities, thanks to its key position at the junction of five rivers, but the European heritage of its residents is still clearly visible, especially at 17 meter high Monument to the Azoreans. Conscientious planning efforts have managed to preserve many of the city’s historic monuments, such as the 18th century Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady Mother of God and elegant City Hall. You can even catch a movie in a converted, early 20th century power plant. Porto Alegre progressive politics have spawned a vibrant arts and culture scene, embodied by the great museums, and thriving LGBT community.
