Ratu Boko sits atop a hill and is scattered with the awe-inspiring remains of a palace, taking its name from a legendary king mentioned in the Roro Jonggrant tales meaning âStork Kingâ. The site exhibits a fascinating blend of Buddhist and Hindu influences, havin been initially constructed by the Buddhist Syailendra Dynasty in the 8th century AD and later taken over by Hindu Mataram kings. The main gate, adorned with floral and tendrils ornametation, leads to the heart of the site. Nearby, the Batukapur temple stands as a testament to the architectural prowess of its time, and the Pembakaran Temple consists of a three-meter-high terrace with a well-like structure used for cremation rituals. The Paseban, a royal court meeting place, is located south of the main gate, while Keputren served as a residence for the royal princesses. Explore the caves of Gua Lanang and Gua Wadon on the hill slopes and witness the historical treasures of the site for an entry fee of USD$25.
