Reifenstein Castle

Over the past 900 years this castle was never sacked or destroyed, making it the best preserved castle in the region.

About

Constructed in the 12th century, the castle repeatedly changed hands until it was sold to the castle to the German Chivalric Order in 1470. Within the complex is the little, 14th century St. Zeno church, with tree trunk coffins dating back to the 4th to 8th century. The castle has 10 rooms open to the public, which are still in excellent condition. The castle keep dates back to the 12th century, while the great hall is from the 15th century. Fans of late-Gothic architecture will be enchanted by the Green Hall, with its rich ornamentation ornaments and fantastic wooden latticework. Of course, no medieval castle would be complete without a portcullis, torture chamber, courtroom and a subterranean dungeon. Please note the castle can only be visited with a guided tour, so check their schedule at http://www.suedtirolerland.it/en/highlights/castles-mansions/castel-tasso/
