Germany

Rottingen

With its historic monuments and frequent cultural events, this medieval town is doubly alluring.

About

Likely settled in the 5th century, Röttingen had a rough history, being the site of medieval massacres and wars. Today, visitors will find the small village has a charming historic air to it, thanks in large part to the traditional half-timbered houses, and lovely Baroque Town Hall. A large portion of the town’s 17th century defensive walls, and half of its watch-towers are still standing. Another unusual monument is the ‘High Building’, which at standing 5 stories tall, was originally a base for the Teutonic order. The town’s castle dates back to the 13th century, though was renovated through the years, and houses a museum dedicated to the region’s wine.
