San Juan de Gaztelugatxe
This dramatically situated medieval hermitage gained international fame as "Dragonstone" in Game of Thrones.
About
Perched on a rocky outcrop, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe does emanate a certain rugged charm, but itâs the wonderful connecting stone bridge that really makes this craggy islet stand out. It started life as a hermitage before a church dedicated to John the Baptist, who it is rumoured set foot on the island, was erected in the 9th century. A lovely stone church still sits on the top although the original structure is long gone; indeed itâs been destroyed and rebuilt several times. Once reaching the church you are advised to ring the bell three times to bring yourself good luck. While âCastle Rockâ has pulled in visitors for as long as the bridge has been there, it has seen a more recent upsurge in daytrippers due to it being used as an important filming location in the hit series Game of Thrones, doubling up for Dragonstone, home of the Targaryens.
