Sankt Johann im Pongau

They were copper-mining here in the Bronze Age, now this small but beautifully-formed town is reliant on tourism for its living. Luckily it has much to offer.

About

Its picturesque setting allows beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and the Salzach Valley, and many peaceful strolls can be had along various trails around the town. The Liechtensteinklamm, a narrow gorge, is the star natural attraction of the area. Around 4 kilometres long and around 300 metres deep, the gorge is comfortably accessible by wooden walkways allowing you to immerse yorself in this natural wonder formed by mountain streams over thousands of years. The town itself has no lack of man-made attractions. The Pongauer Dom or Cathedral, named in honour of St. John the Baptist, is one of the most significant Gothic churches in Austria. The original church was destroyed in the town fire of 1855 but has been rebuilt. This two-spired parish church looks out majestically over the valley, its interior equally majestic with wooden Gothic sculptures and a number of Late-Gothic figures among Neo-Gothic altars.
