Santiago de Cuba
Watched over by a UNESCO-listed fortress, Cubaâs former capital is fast and feisty, with a historic center that preserves its proud past.
About
Founded in 1514, and first governed by conquistador HernĂĄn CortĂ©s, Santiago de Cuba has long been one of the islandâs most important cities. It was the capital of Cuba, the focal point of the Spanish-American War, and the starting point of Fidel Castroâs communist revolution. With such a rich history, Cubaâs second largest city has no shortage of attractions. A great place to start your visit is the CĂ©spedes Park and the Museum of the Historical Cuban Atmosphere, the elegant Nuestra Señora de la AsunciĂłn Cathedral, and the Casa Diego VelĂĄzquez House nearby. If you love history, there are a number of house museums scattered around the charming historic center, and the Cementerio Santa Ifigenia Graveyard is the final resting place of several local heroes. Or head up to the Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca Castle. This UNESCO World Heritage Site isnât just an impressive fortification - itâs also a fantastic viewpoint and informative museum! Santiago de Cuba is also known for its lively music - nearly every Cuban music genre from salsa to son started here, and they continue to pulse through the streets.
