Sarospatak Castle

Each addition to this medieval castle was carried out in a new architectural style, while preserving the older sections.

About

First built in the 13th century, Sárospatak Castle is believed to be the birthplace of Saint Elizabeth. Over the centuries, the castle was expanded and remodelled. The 15th century Red Tower is the oldest surviving section. A guided tour brings visitors through the period-correct rooms. The Renaissance palace wing is connected to the tower by a 17th century loggia. It was the Rákóczi family who built the larger loggia, which now contains an exhibition to them, the 18th century uprisings, and the castle’s later occupants. Within the palace, visitors will find richly-decorated rooms, overflowing with furniture, tapestries, and art, not to mention fine stucco work, like a large rose in the middle of a vaulted ceiling.
