Founded by the Celts, the city was conquered by the Romans in the 1st century BC. Around 50 BC, they constructed the cityās UNESCO listed aqueduct, which stretches for 813 meters, is considered one of the best preserved aqueducts left in the world. The romantic Alcazar overlooking the city was built under Arab rule in the 12th century. After the reconquest, when Alfonso erected the city walls, it became a favoured noble residence, and the site of Isabella the Catholicās coronation. Today its elegant gardens have been maintained, but now houses the Royal School of Artillery museum. Segoviaās 16th century cathedral was the last Gothic cathedral built in Spain. Nicknamed "The Lady of Cathedralsā, itās a massive masterpiece of Basque-Castilian Gothic architecture, with 18 ornately decorated chapels. Strewn throughout throughout the city, visitors will find Romanesque churches, Mudejar buildings, and fortified houses.
