Tesanj Castle
One of the countryâs largest castles, overlooking the historic old town, visitors are treated to great views and a healthy dose of history.
About
Though the hilltop has been fortified since Roman times, the current castle was built during the 15th century, a testament to the tumultuous history of Ottoman and Hungarian occupation. Under the Ottomans, the 6,296 square metre citadel housed a permanent army. The hill is nearly vertical on three sides, leaving only a winding approach up to the castleâs gate. Here, the charming ÄarĹĄija quarter, with a 17th century clock tower - one of only four still functioning, a rebuilt historic mosque, as well as old wooden market shops and tile-roofed cafes. The entrance-ticket-cum-postcard allows visitors to roam the grounds, or pay a visit to the museum tower.
