The Dark Hedges

The Dark Hedges were planted in the 18th century by James Stuart to impress his well-to-do guests on their way to his gorgeous Georgian manor. Since then, this row of beech trees has grown into an eerie tunnel of interlocking limbs. Adding to its ominous air is the legend of the Grey Lady, a specter said to drift among the trees, disappearing once she reaches the end of the line. But it’s a more modern piece of lore that has ingrained the Dark Hedges into popular culture - they also served as the filming location for the King’s Road in Game of Thrones. If you’re a GoT fan, they should definitely be on your itinerary. But plan your visit with a grain of reality; when you boil it down, the Dark Hedges are a tree-lined road. Those moody photos are the work of some camera trickery and editing, so if you have the skills, they do offer a great photo op.
