Vajont Dam
Regarded as one of the worst man-made disasters of all time, the landslide tragedy of the Vajont Dam devastated entire villages and killed nearly 2,000 people.
About
The Vajont Dam, situated in Erto, Italy was completed in 1959 and was considered one of the largest in the world at the time. On October 9th, 1963, large rock broke off from the top of Monte Toc and fell into the reservoir of the Vajont Dam, generating an immense wave of at least 50 million cubic meters of water. The flooding destroyed villages and consequently killed nearly 2,000 people. Despite the devastation, the dam managed to survive virtually intact. Today, Vajont museum has been set up in remembrance of the tragedy. Guided tours of the crest, opened to the public in 2007, are also available to pay tribute to and reflect on the Vajont Dam tragedy. Visitors can observe the scenery of the Mount Toc landslide and the underlying Longarone valley. A small memorial chapel as well and memorial plaques and a visitor center is open to explore.
