Varna
With its seaside park and exceptional museums, Bulgariaâs largest resort town is actually a historic oasis.
About
Settled by the Thracians, Varna flourished thanks to diverse trade relationships, even working with the infamously war-like Scythians. The cityâs ancient history has been preserved in its archaeological museum, where among the many ancient artefacts, visitors will find the worldâs oldest gold treasure, which was discovered in a 6500-year-old tomb. For a slice of more recent history, the Retro Museum pulls back the curtain on life during the socialist era. Here visitors will find everything from Bulgarian cigarettes to vacuum cleaners and cosmetics and wax figures of the most prominent public figures alongside Eastern European cars. In the Maritime Park visitors can enjoy 22 acres greenery and gorgeous views of the Black Sea, and probably Varna's best-known building - the Varna Aquarium, where visitors will find fauna and flora from the Black Sea as well as more exotic species from around the world.
