Wat Chaiya Mangkalaram Temple

This colorful Thai Buddhist temple houses one of the world’s largest reclining Buddha statues.

About

The Wat Chaiya Mangkalaram temple was built in 1845 by a Thai monk, on land granted to Georgetown’s Siamese community. The temple has been a centerpiece of Buddhist devotion ever since, and is the focal point of the city’s Thai celebrations. At the heart of the temple, a 100-foot long golden Buddha inspires both faithful and visitors alike with its peaceful pose - in fact many devotees have their ashes placed behind the statue so they can share the smiling Buddha’s tranquillity. Along with the main statue, the temple also has a series of smaller Buddhas in various guises, other popular Thai deities, and colourful statues of Devas and other mythical creatures scattered throughout the temple grounds.
