According to tradition, Wat Phra Nang Sang was built 500 years ago in honor of an executed princess. The story goes, she was accused of being unfaithful and sentenced to death for her indiscretion. However, when she was executed, her blood bled white, thus showing her purity. The temple is revered by locals because in 1785, they gathered here to face off against the invading Burmese. Today, it’s affectionately called the ‘Messy Temple’ because of the constant additions of buildings, statues, and artwork. The entire complex is decorated in eye-catching colors with intricate details and a healthy dose of gold, and houses famous religious artifacts including a mummified monk, 3 tin Buddhas that were found inside a larger Buddha, and statues of the women who led the battle against the Burmese. Keep an eye out for the unusual ‘yaks’ - instead of the typical ogres, these are bare-breasted, and bear assault rifles.
