Germany
Wernigerode
This quaint town is part of Germany's timber-framed road, which unites over 100 cities in preserving traditional half-timbered houses.
About
Located in the foothills of the Hraz region, its origins are lost in the distant past, with the first written record being the appointment of a count in the 12th century. The narrow streets of the old town are lined with Germany's iconic half-timbered houses, with the Gothic town hallās timbered facade dating back to 1498. Now, it is a popular gateway to Northern Germany's most mountainous region, and is part of the āGerman Timber Frame Roadā, a route through Germany meant to preserve the cultural heritage of the variety of half-timber styles. Overlooking the town is the 19th century Wernigerode Castle, which was built on the foundations of a much older medieval castle. Visitors can tour the lavish interior, and enjoy panoramic views of the city and Brocken Mountain beyond.
