This hatchery does important work helping repopulate the country’s rarest Kiwis, and offers visitors a chance to see them up close.
The West Coast Wildlife Centre is a partnership between the Department of Conservation & Te Runanga o Makaawhio that serves as the official hatching facility for the world's 2 rarest kiwis – the Rowi and Haast Tokoeka. With populations of less than 500, and limited ranges in secluded areas, this is the only place in New Zealand where you can see a live The West Coast Wildlife Centre is the only place in New Zealand that you can see the rowi in a nocturnal walkthrough area. Afterwards, you can learn more about the famed Franz Josef Glacier at the interactive exhibit. You can also sign up for a backstage look at the hatching programme to see the adorable but important work the facility does to bolster the wild populations of these endangered birds.
