West Coast Wildlife Centre

This hatchery does important work helping repopulate the country’s rarest Kiwis, and offers visitors a chance to see them up close.

About

The West Coast Wildlife Centre is a partnership between the Department of Conservation & Te Runanga o Makaawhio that serves as the official hatching facility for the world's 2 rarest kiwis – the Rowi and Haast Tokoeka. With populations of less than 500, and limited ranges in secluded areas, this is the only place in New Zealand where you can see a live The West Coast Wildlife Centre is the only place in New Zealand that you can see the rowi in a nocturnal walkthrough area. Afterwards, you can learn more about the famed Franz Josef Glacier at the interactive exhibit. You can also sign up for a backstage look at the hatching programme to see the adorable but important work the facility does to bolster the wild populations of these endangered birds. Because of the limited number of openings it’s highly recommended you sign up for the backstage experience in advance at www.wildkiwi.co.nz
