About
York was founded by the Romans in 71AD as their provincial capital, and later, served as the seat of the Northumbrian and JórvĆk (Viking) kingdoms. In the Middle Ages, the Church of England made York capital of the northern ecclesiastical province - a role it retains to this day. This prestigious position blessed York with its world-famous Minster. The largest Gothic Cathedral North of the Alps, the York Minster is filled with historic treasures from its medieval stained glass to intricately carved screen, and its interactive underground chambers walk visitors through Yorkās 2000-year history. Afterwards, make your way through The Shambles, a street 14th century, timber-framed buildings, and on to the medieval town walls, parts of which date back to the Romans. For culture connoisseurs, thereās a variety of great museums to choose from, including the Castle Museum, Train Museum, Art Gallery and Viking Center.
