Kellie's Castle
Feel free to explore at your own pace and discover
Stop: 1 h 30 min - admission not included
Kellieâs Castle is the the unfinished home of rubber plantation owner William Kellie Smith. The Scotsman commissioned the construction of a family estate in 1915, combining of Scottish, Moorish, and Tamilvanan Indian architecture, and luxurious trappings like the countryâs first elevator, an indoor tennis court, and a rooftop terrace. To make his home perfect, Smith even brought in workers and materials from India. After an outbreak of the Spanish Flu killed many of the workers, the survivors asked Smith if they could build a temple on the estate grounds, and he agreed. In appreciation of his kindness, the workers crafted a statue of him alongside their deities. However, after Smith abruptly died from pneumonia, his grieving wife sold the property and it was left abandoned. Today, visitors can explore the ruins to admire the unusual architecture, step into the furnished rooms to see what might have been, and learn about the ghost stories. Daytrip is loved all around the world. Here's why.
Kellie's Castle is located in Batu Gajah, approximately 25 miles (40 km) south of Ipoh, about a 30-minute drive. Gopeng is roughly 20 miles (32 km) south of Ipoh city center, approximately a 25-minute drive. With a private driver, both stops flow naturally into a comfortable half-day itinerary without any stress about navigation or parking.
Kellie's Castle is a fun and engaging stop for older children and teenagers who enjoy history, architecture, and mystery. The ruins have a tangible sense of adventure to them, and the ghost stories add a playful edge. However, some areas involve climbing on uneven surfaces and steep staircases, so parental supervision is important for younger children. The grounds are open and shaded, making for a comfortable visit in all but the hottest part of the day.
Visitors can explore the multi-level ruins, walking through open rooms, climbing to the rooftop for views across the surrounding plantation landscape, and passing through narrow corridors and partially built staircases. Information boards throughout the site explain the intended use of each space and the history of William Kellie Smith. A nearby Hindu temple, built by the Tamil workers on the estate, is also worth a short visit. Entry tickets are purchased separately.
Gopeng is a small heritage town with roots in Perak's 19th-century tin mining era. Its compact historic core features rows of weathered Chinese shophouses, small temples, and old community buildings that reflect the character of a once-thriving mining settlement. It is a quiet and atmospheric place to wander at a leisurely pace, with far fewer visitors than major tourist sites, giving it an authentic and unhurried character that history enthusiasts will appreciate.
Malaysia's official currency is the Malaysian ringgit (MYR). Most major attractions, shops, and restaurants in the Ipoh and Gopeng region accept cash payments in ringgit. Some larger venues also accept credit cards, but carrying local currency is advisable for smaller sites and markets. Currency exchange and ATMs are widely available in Ipoh city center before you depart on your day trip.
Kellie's Castle is an unfinished colonial mansion built by Scottish rubber planter William Kellie Smith, who began construction in 1915. Smith intended it as a grand family home combining Scottish, Moorish, and Tamil-inspired architecture, and even planned to install Malaysia's first private elevator. Construction was disrupted by the Spanish flu and later halted when Smith died of pneumonia in 1926. His family sold the estate, and it was left abandoned, giving rise to the legends and ghost stories that surround it today.
Comfortable, breathable clothing is recommended as the lowland Perak region is hot and humid year-round. Wear closed-toe shoes for exploring the uneven terrain of Kellie's Castle, and bring a hat, sunscreen, and a water bottle. If you are visiting any temples in the area, dress respectfully with covered shoulders and knees as a sign of consideration for local religious customs.
Weekday mornings are generally the least crowded times to visit Kellie's Castle, as weekend afternoons tend to draw local visitors and larger groups. Arriving shortly after opening, around 9:30 a.m., gives you the best chance to explore the ruins with some peace and quiet. The castle is open daily from morning to evening, and the grounds are shaded enough to make a mid-morning visit comfortable even in the warm lowland climate.
