Winchester was England’s capital before London. It’s got royal history, old legends, and some seriously good architecture. Start at Winchester Cathedral. It’s long, quiet, and full of history. You’ll see Jane Austen’s grave, some incredible medieval stonework, and stained glass that somehow made it through World War II. Then walk over to the Great Hall, it’s the only part of Winchester Castle still standing. Inside, there’s the Round Table sitting big, bold, and painted with the names of King Arthur’s knights. Believe the legend or don’t, it’s still a striking thing to see. Take your time getting there. The streets in between are full of character. Old pubs, crooked timber buildings, and a mix of past centuries all in one place.

Salisbury is small and easy to walk around. The cathedral stands tall above it all and has for over 750 years. Start with Salisbury Cathedral. It’s tall, peaceful, and full of detail if you slow down and look. You’ll see one of the oldest working clocks in the world. The real Magna Carta is kept just around the corner in the Chapter House. After that, wander through Cathedral Close, a quiet green space with historic homes and museums. Then walk into town where Market Square is still lively, and the narrow lanes nearby are lined with timber buildings, old pubs, and a few hidden surprises.
