Know more about your day trip
Obidos is one of Portugal's most perfectly preserved medieval walled towns, appearing largely unchanged since the 13th century. During your 3.5-hour tour, you'll walk through narrow cobblestone streets lined with whitewashed houses trimmed in blue and yellow, explore the fully intact stone walls offering stunning views of terracotta rooftops and the surrounding countryside, and visit the 12th-century castle now operating as a luxury hotel. This fairytale-like setting has earned Obidos recognition as one of Portugal's Seven Wonders.
Begin your 3.5-hour day tour by entering through the main gate (Porta da Vila) with its beautiful 18th-century azulejo tile panels. Walk the length of Rua Direita, the main commercial street, to browse local shops selling handicrafts, books, and ginjinha (cherry liqueur). Climb the town walls for panoramic views (access near the castle or town gate), explore the Igreja de Santa Maria church featuring baroque golden woodwork, and allow time to wander the atmospheric side streets away from the main thoroughfare.
Ginjinha (or simply ginja) is a traditional Portuguese sour cherry liqueur particularly associated with Obidos. The local specialty is served in small chocolate cups (ginjinha em copo de chocolate), allowing you to drink the liqueur then eat the chocolate cup. Several shops along Rua Direita offer tastings and sales of this regional specialty. For an authentic experience during your tour, stop at Bar Ibn Errik Rex or one of the small street stalls to sample this sweet, slightly tart liqueur.
Obidos is located approximately 85 kilometers (53 miles) north of Lisbon, with a driving time of about 1 hour each way. The comfortable journey takes you through the beautiful Portuguese countryside, passing rural landscapes and small towns. Your private Daytrip driver handles all transportation, allowing you to relax and enjoy the scenery both ways while maximizing your exploration time in Obidos.
Obidos can be enjoyed year-round, though it has distinct seasonal attractions. Spring (April-June) offers pleasant temperatures and beautiful wildflowers along the walls. Summer brings longer days but more tourists. Fall provides good weather with fewer crowds. Winter features the magical Obidos Vila Natal (Christmas Village) in December and the International Chocolate Festival in March/April. Early morning or late afternoon visits provide the best light for photography and a more authentic atmosphere before or after day-trip crowds.
Obidos offers several charming restaurants featuring traditional Portuguese cuisine. For a leisurely meal during your 3.5-hour tour, consider A Nova Casa de Ramiro or Jamon Jamon for authentic local dishes. If you prefer quicker dining, try Petrarum Domus for sandwiches and pastries or grab savory pastries from the bakeries along Rua Direita. Don't miss trying the local sweets, particularly chocolate and ginjinha combinations that represent Obidos specialties.
Obidos hosts several notable festivals throughout the year. The International Chocolate Festival (March/April) transforms the town into a chocolate lover's paradise. The Medieval Market (July) features costumed performers, traditional crafts, and food from the Middle Ages. The Literary Town (Obidos Vila Literaria) program runs year-round with bookshops in historic buildings. The Christmas Village (December) offers a magical winter experience with lights, ice skating, and festive activities. Check the current calendar when planning your day tour.
