Know more about your day trip

The ruins of Salona are located in Solin, just 5 miles (8 km) northeast of Split, roughly a 15-minute drive. Klis Fortress is about 8 miles (13 km) from Split, taking around 20 minutes to reach. Both sites are close to one another and easy to combine in a single day trip.
Yes. Klis Fortress served as the filming location for the city of Meereen in season four of "Game of Thrones," where Daenerys Targaryen frees enslaved people. Fans of the show will recognize several distinctive features of the fortress walls and towers from those famous scenes. There is also a small museum on-site with historical armor and weaponry on display.
From June through September, Salona is open daily from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM From October through May, it closes at 6:00 PM, and the ticket office may not be staffed on Sundays in the off-season. It is worth checking in advance if you are visiting outside summer, as hours can vary.
Salona was the ancient capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia and one of the largest cities in the Roman Empire, once home to over 60,000 inhabitants. Emperor Diocletian, who later built his famous palace in nearby Split, was born here. The ruins include an amphitheater, city walls, basilicas, baths, and early Christian burial sites. Entry costs around 8 euros.
The views from Klis Fortress are exceptional. From the ramparts and towers, you can see across the entire Split coastal plain to the Adriatic Sea, the islands of Brac and Solta, and on clear days, even further along the Dalmatian coast. The fortress sits at around 385 meters above sea level, making it one of the most dramatic vantage points in the region.
Klis Fortress is a medieval stronghold built on a rocky ridge above Split, originally constructed by the ancient Illyrian tribe Dalmatae. Over more than 2,000 years, it has been held by Romans, Byzantine rulers, Croatian kings, Venetians, and Ottoman forces. Its hilltop position made it one of the most strategically important defensive sites in the Adriatic, offering commanding views across Split and the Dalmatian islands.
Wear comfortable shoes and bring sun protection, as the site has minimal shade. Start at the Tusculum museum near the main entrance, which provides context for the ruins through artifacts and exhibits. Allow at least two hours to explore the amphitheater, the Episcopal Centre, the Porta Caesarea gate, and the scattered sarcophagi across the grounds.
Salona is open and flat, so visit early before the midday heat kicks in, and shade becomes scarce. Klis Fortress involves some uphill walking on uneven stone surfaces, so sturdy footwear is essential. Entry to Klis costs around 10 euros for adults, which also includes access to the nearby Olive Museum at Stella Croatica. Both sites can comfortably be explored in a full day.
