Cacela Velha
With almost no tourist infrastructure, this tiny fishing village offers an authentic taste of the Algarve, and one of the best beaches in the world.

The jumble of white-washed houses perched on a low cliff offer spectacular coastal views, and serve as a reminder of how the Algarve must have looked half a century ago. The townтАЩs pocket-sized fort dates back to the 18th century, but isnтАЩt open to tourists - it houses a maritime police station. However, the handful of restaurants serve fresh, locally caught seafood that shouldnтАЩt be missed. The beach you see below the village is considered one of the best in the world. Signs marked тАЬF├бbricaтАЭ take you downhill where you can walk out to the beach at lowtide, or a fair-weather ferryman can take you over.
