Carnuntum

Carnuntum began as a Roman legionary fortress in 40 AD, and within a century grew to become the capital of the Pannonia province thanks in part to its flourishing amber trade. In its prime, the city was home to over 50,000, but was destroyed by Germanic invaders in the 5th century. Today, reconstructions of a citizen’s home, a villa, and of course, the thermae, allow visitors to step into ancient Roman life. Visitors can also explore the ruins of the city, where the ancient gate, palace, and amphitheatre are still visible. Carnuntum’s museum is the largest in the country, and showcases everything from tombstones and mosaics, to statues of Roman and Egyptian gods, as well as jewellery, coins, and everyday items. Throughout the year, the site also hosts special events and exhibitions to bring the city’s history a life and give visitors the chance to experience Roman culture first-hand.
