On a hill overlooking the Rio Tinto, this ancient walled settlement has been a desirable location for centuries. Dating back to Turdetanos, the castle complex still exhibits Roman , Visigothic and Andalusian remains, but the majority of the structure is from construction undertaken following the Reconquest in the 12h century. Spanning almost 2 km, the complex presents 44 towers and 5 Arab doors, besides which was likely the main entrance to the ancient Roman settlement. The religious edifices, a church and synagogue, cannibalized older structures, where the church was formerly a mosque, and the synagogue an old church. Held within the castle dungeon is an exhibition with a disturbing array of torture instruments, some of which are still implemented today.
