This little lake-front village grew around the medieval castle and the church on a promontory overlooking Lake Como. Dating back to Roman times, the village added тАШPlinioтАЩ to its name in 1863 in honor of Pliny, who is thought to have been born here. The 13th century castle is built on the remains of an old Roman fortress that utilized smoke signals to communicate with other outposts along the lake shore. Hiking up the тАЬscalottesтАЭ, stone staircases with steps cut into rock, past ancient patrician villas, gives access to the townтАЩs cobbled square. The San Tommaso di Canterbury parish, consecrated by Roberto Visconti in 1356 houses several 14th century frescoes.
