Grotta dello Smeraldo
Filled with a green glow, there's an underwater nativity scene beneath the waters of this sea cave.

The Grotta dello Smeraldo formed millions of years ago when soluble rock below the surface dissipated over time to create the lovely cave we know today. It was originally well above sea level, but due to volcanic activity it sank much lower until it became flooded by the Mediterranean. An underground tunnel connects the cave to the sea, filtering in only green light, which gives it itтАЩs famous emerald colour. The cave itself, which youтАЩll get to see via a rowing boat, is 45m by 32m, and a fairly impressive 24m high; not huge but the green glow more than makes up for that. Oddly enough a nativity scene was installed 4m under the water by local ceramicists from nearby Vietri sul Mare in 1956 . Advisable to get there for around 1pm if possible as the sunlight is optimal and the queues are low.
