Built by King Rama IV in 1860 as his summer palace, Khao Wang is a hilltop complex with royal halls, palaces, temples, and outbuildings in an elegant blend of architectural styles. To reach the hilltop, visitors can hike up the path, or opt for a cable-car ride before heading out to the complexтАЩs 3 sections. The first is the palace complex, which has a variety of outbuildings, but itтАЩs Phetchaphum Phairot hall that garners the most attention. Originally the throne room, itтАЩs now a museum thatтАЩs been restored to its 1883 appearance. Another hall houses a photography exhibit about King Mongkut and the current Royal family. Then thereтАЩs the 40-meter-tall Chom Phet pagoda, which is said to house relics of the Buddha. Finally, the Wat Phra Kaeo Noi temple has several styles of pagoda. While walking through the forest, youтАЩre sure to encounter the monkeys that live there - while cute, they are wild, so donтАЩt approach them.
