This rocky peninsula has been inhabited since the early Iberian tribes, though it was the Moors who are responsible for laying the foundation for the current fortifications. At the turn of the 14th century, the Knights Templar replaced the Arab citadel with a larger and stronger castle. A century later, Benedict XIII moved into the castle, converting it into a noble residence befitting his status as тАШthe other popeтАЩ, and lived here until his death in 1423. Today, visitors are able to roam the castle grounds, soaking in the spectacular views from its ramparts, and take a tour of the interior to learn about the Knights Templar and Benedict XIII.
