First built in the 13th century by the Counts of Ravensberg to serve as a residence, administrative centre, and protect the town and trade routes. As warfare advanced, the castle was modified and expanded, until the end of the 17th century when it no longer offered effective protection. After being severely damaged during World War II, restoration work discovered the floor from the original fortress, and stairs leading down to the catacombs. Today, visitors can enjoy stupendous panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, or delve into the system of underground passages. Every July, it serves as the backdrop for Sparrenburgfest, a festival that brings the Middle Ages to life.
