First built in the 13th century, the original Stolpen Castle was expanded into a noble Renaissance residence in the 17th century. In 1716, Anna Constantia von Brockdorff, Countess of Cosel, was imprisoned in the castle dungeon. The countess was the official mistress of King Augustus of Poland, but after becoming too involved in court politics was banished. She was kept in Stolpen CastleтАЩs dungeon until her death in 1765. Since 1875, the castle has been a museum, with an exhibition devoted to the CountessтАЩ adventurous life. Visitors can also see torture devices, canons, and peer into the worldтАЩs deepest unlined well.
