Zouk Mikael's Old Souk, steeped in history, reflects the legacy of the Khazen feudal lords. Its origins date back to Prince Fakhreddin's urban revitalization efforts, which included the construction of bridges, khans, and castles. The Old Souk flourished during the heyday of berry cultivation and silk production, earning the moniker "silk stocks market." As the 20th century ushered in mechanization, old shops were transformed into residences and the upper souk into a charming tourist destination. The lower souk featured a pharmacy, jewelry stores, a printing house, groceries, and agricultural shops. Mir's coffee shop at its entrance served as a gathering spot for intellectuals, poets like Elias Abou Chabake, and historical figures like Youssef Beik Karam. The lower souk was transformed into a pedestrian zone, adding a romantic touch that continues to draw thousands of tourists each year to this charming slice of history in Zouk Mikael.
