About Naples
Naples is Italy's third-largest city and one of the oldest continuously inhabited urban areas globally. This beautiful city is a place of contradictions. While it's cultured and opulent, it's also gritty and chaotic, and although it's exuberant and exciting, it's also peaceful and understated. In sum, anyone traveling from Amalfi to Naples will be wowed by the near-endless architectural gems, good food, and rich history on display.
To many, Naples is the cradle of Italian culture, with illustrious art, unforgettable literature, near indescribable architecture, lively music and theater, and friendly residents. But how did this city become the spectacular place it is today? The answer: an expansive history. For starters, Naples was founded in the 8th century BC by the Cumaeans and was one of the most important cities of Magna Graecia before it was conquered by the Romans in 326 BC.
Then, in the Middle Ages, the Byzantines conquered Naples, which became the Duchy of Naples and was an independent state for more than five centuries until the Normans invaded in 1139. The Normans didn't hold onto it too long, with Angevia seizing the city in 1266 and making it the Kingdom of Naples in 1282. Under the rule of Charles I of Anjou, Naples became one of Europe's most influential cultural centers with a refinement never before seen.
A few centuries later, Naples became the capital of the Kingdom of the Two Sicillies until the unification of Italy. All of these cultures and customs heavily influenced Naples and created the city it is today. That's why attractions like the famed castle Castel dell'Ovo and ancient walkways adorned with different stylistic influences like Piazza del Plebiscito, San Gregorio Armeno, and Quartieri Spagnoli exist and can be visited when you decide to tour Naples.

Choose a reliable private transportation company

Whether traveling from Amalfi to Naples solo or with your family in tow, Daytrip's friendly English-speaking private drivers will expertly navigate the quaint coastal roads to get you to your destination safely and comfortably.
Avoid traffic
The road from the Amalfi coast to Naples isn't long, with the trip taking a little under an hour and a half, but it can be frustrating if you're caught in traffic. That's why it is best to leave Amalfi early in the morning before peak traffic, especially if traveling to Naples during the high season. We promise driving early in the morning won't detract from the stunning coastline views.
How to get from Amalfi to Naples
You have a few ways to get from Amalfi to Naples, but some travel options are better than others. Here's a breakdown to help you decide how to get from Amalfi to Naples.
From Amalfi to Naples by train
Unfortunately, there are no direct trains from Amalfi to Naples. You'll need to take a SITA bus to Sorrento or Salerno, and then you can catch a direct train to Naples.
The train is relatively inexpensive, costing between 5.50 to 20.00 euros. The train ride from Salerno to Naples takes a little under an hour. There are multiple buses and trains daily, so you have some flexibility, but they do tend to be extremely crowded during the peak season.
From Amalfi to Naples by bus
There is a direct bus from Amalfi to Naples Airport. This is a great budget option if you need to get to the airport, but not so convenient if you're staying in Naples.
Pintour has a bus every 4 hours, starting at 3:50 AM. The last bus is at 5:50 PM, and tickets cost 20 euros. Sita Sud also services this route twice daily for under 10 euros.
From Amalfi to Naples by private car transfer
The easiest, most comfortable, and fastest way to travel directly from Amalfi to Naples is by private car. When you book with Daytrip, you'll get to travel on your own schedule and have the best seat for watching the beautiful coast and countryside go by before you get to Naples.
Stop for arguably the best view of the Amalfi Coast at Ravello, step back in time at the Pompeii Archaeological Site, or stretch your legs hiking Mt. Vesuvius. Along the way, chat with your English-speaking driver about local culture and history, or things to do when you get to Naples.
Daytrip will ensure you have a comfortable experience and can sit back and relax. We'll handle everything from your luggage to dropping you off in time, so you don't need to worry about a thing.
From Amalfi to Naples by ferry
If you are traveling from Amalfi to Naples between April and October, it's possible to take a ferry. There are four direct ferries a day from Amalfi to Naples operated by NLG, and Alilauro runs a hydrofoil on weekends.
The earliest ferry is at 8:30 AM, and the last ferry usually departs at 3:55 PM. Tickets cost between 25-28.5 euros for the 1.5-hour trip. The ferry offers a great departing view of the Amalfi Coast but can get bumpy. Ferries may be delayed or canceled depending on the weather, so it's not the most reliable option. You also shouldn't expect to be dropped off at your accommodation like private transfers do.
Things to do when you get to Naples
If you're traveling from Amalfi to Naples and aren't sure what attractions and landmarks are a must-visit, look below at our recommended list of some of the best things to do when you get to Naples.
Palace hop around Piazza del Plebiscito
Piazza del Plebiscito, Naples’ main square, is the best place to start your visit. This huge space is surrounded by multiple palaces, including the Royal Palace, Palazzo Salerno, and Prefecture Palace, and the Basilica Royal. And that’s just the start. You can set out to find more palaces, and historic churches like the Naples Cathedral or the Sam Domenico Maggiore.
Gesù Nuovo
This spacious pizza on the western side of Naples has one of the most unique churches in the city. The Gesu Nuova church has an unforgettable Brutalist-Baroque facade and an opulent interior fit for royalty. This makes sense considering the church was originally a palace built for Roberto Sanseverino, Prince of Salerno, in 1470.
Along with admiring the distinctive architecture, you can learn more about Dr. Giuseppe Moscati, who was made a saint in 1987 for his incredibly long-lived career in the 19th century that he dedicated to healing the poor.
Fontanelle Cemetery
If spooky attractions are always on your travel bucket list, visit the Fontanelle Cemetery in Naples. This cemetery is hidden beneath the streets of Naples in an old quarry that has existed since the 17th century. This quarry was used as a burial site for many of the 250,000 residents who died during the plague.
We must warn you that the Fontanelle Cemetery can be a little unnerving with its piles of bones out in the open, but the city's tradition of caring for a lost soul's skull is interesting to behold. When visiting, you might glimpse someone tending to their designated skeleton while you learn more about this practice.
Pizza at Via dei Tribunali
Many visit Naples for its famous pizzas, and as the birthplace of pizza, you won't be disappointed. For one of the tastiest, most delicious pizzas you'll ever have, you need to visit Via dei Tribunali.
This alleyway is the home to the best pizza in Italy, and at any of the pizzerias, you can buy a signature fluffy charred dough pizza. Yet, if you want to taste something truly wonderful and don't mind queuing, Sorbillo is the place to be for an authentic Naples pizza unlike any other.
San Carlo Theatre
Those who enjoy world-class operas, concerts, and ballets shouldn't miss visiting the San Carlo Theatre. This majestic and grand theater, with its opulent interiors and fresco ceilings, is the oldest in Europe and has achieved international acclaim, so if you decide to see a show – no matter what it is – you're in for a treat.
However, don't forget to look at the state-of-the-art museum at the San Carlo Theatre, which features an immersive 3D gallery and contemporary exhibitions.
Best time to visit Naples
Summer is the most popular time to visit the Amalfi Coast and Naples. We find the searing temperatures and dense crowds hamper the experience though. Instead, the best time to visit Naples is in the spring. Springtime in Naples is mid-March to early June, and you can expect warm, pleasant weather that has none of the sticky heat of the summertime.
During the spring, with mild temperatures, you can visit as many wondrous attractions as you can fit into a day without worrying about heat stroke or sweating yourself out of your clothes. You also won't need to worry about the crowds as much since fewer people visit in spring than in summer.
Additionally, if you go in the spring, you won't need to contend with most shops shutting down for the summer break.
Fall is another good option, with cooler temperatures and fewer crowds than the summer. It's much like spring except without the blooming flowers. Winter is also an option if you don't mind cooler, occasionally rainy weather, in exchange for the best prices and the least tourists.

Brilliant private transfer for my daughter's wedding on the Amalfi Coast
“Efficient, highly professional, relaxing and friendly service - I was very pleasantly surprised. We were tired and stressed flying in a pandemic to my daughter's wedding which could not be postponed. Our driver immediately put us at ease with his warm and reassuring manner, whilst maintaining high standards of hygiene and social distancing. The vehicle was immaculate and a glass screen partitioned the driver from the passengers. En route to the Amalfi Coast from Naples we were given thoughtful details of the area and highlights were pointed out as we passed them. On return to the airport the company responded very responsively to my last minute anxious email that we were indeed being picked up at the allocated time and the driver arrived promptly with a friendly welcome. Again our return was smoothly carried out and our driver kept us up to date on expected arrival times in a calm and friendly manner. I can not recommend this service enough. It was brilliant and we shall be using them again - what an excellent find!”
Car service Naples Airport Italy- Cantine del Vesuvio - Amalfi
“Our driver, Alfonso S. was the best! Our group of 6 booked a trip from Naples Airport to Amalfi, with a stop for lunch and a tour at an organic winery. Alfonso, our driver, made this journey such a pleasure. He was punctual, extremely friendly and courteous, and gave us an entertaining talk about local history and information along the way. He was an excellent and very safe driver, which we appreciate. If we have thr opportunity again to book a trip in this area, we would request Alfonso S. Many thanks to him for making our journey such a pleasure.”

Private transfer from Amalfi to Naples, Italy
“We booked (fairly last minute) a car transfer from Amalfi to Naples and although we were warned that it might not be possible because we attempted to book it with less than 24 hours notice, Daytrip came through with a top-notch driver for us. We couldn’t have been more impressed with the professionalism and competence of our driver, Gianfranco. He was so pleasant and courteous and navigated the winding, narrow mountain roads between Amalfi and Naples with ease and confidence. We will not hesitate to book Daytrip again in the future for our transfer needs.”
Fabulous Transfer along Amalfi Coast!
“We were nervous about hiring a driver to take us from Naples to our hotel on the Amalfi Coast, but came across Daytrip and were so pleased with the reviews. They lived up to the hype too - our driver, Giovanni, was splendid and he picked us up at the Naples train station and even waited with our things as we had scheduled a 2-hour Pompeii tour on the way to the Amalfi Coast. He also happened to be our driver on the way back too, driving us to the Naples airport. We really enjoyed our time in the car with him and really appreciated his stories and pointing out things of interest. His English was also very good too, which made things easy! Thank you Daytrip, we will be using you again in the future!”

Imagine the freedom of never waiting for a bus or train. Coming or going when you like. Never having to navigate the roads or schedules. Your driver Manuel was great in every way. He is an excellent driver and spoke perfect English. He provided tips to make our stay better. He is a true professional! Thanks for granting our request to schedule him for our return! Online scheduling and communication between day trip and us was excellent.”
“We were struggling with transportation options between Naples and the Amalfi Coast. We didn’t like the whole train - bus thing as we are almost 70 and hauling luggage around Italy isn’t fun. We are so happy we found Daytrip. The cost was affordable and the drivers are fantastic. The auto’s were modern and clean. We were transferred door to door, Naples to Praiano and return. We were given excellent advice and tips about the area also. I will definitely be using Daytrip in future travels and highly recommend them when traveling.”
“We used Daytrip for 3 trips in Italy and were 100% satisfied. The drivers were fantastic and very knowledgeable about the culture and sites along the way to our destinations in Rome, Naples and Amalfi Coast. They were always about 10 minutes early and called the day before to confirm. I loved being able to pay before the trip to decreased the amount of cash I had to take with me.”
“Great experience with this company. Taxi was slightly cheaper than other transfers from Naples to Amalfi and back again, with the option to stop off to visit local attractions. We chose to visit Pompeii. The company send you driver’s picture, name and phone number before your trip. Drivers turned up on time in people carrier. Very polite, good English, helpful and knowledgeable about local area. Would use this company again.”
