Overview: Car trip from Amsterdam to Bruges
YouтАЩve done everything in Amsterdam, and now youтАЩre ready for a car trip from Amsterdam to Bruges. Traveling by car gives you the opportunity to enrich your travel day by exploring historical sites, tulip fields, and the charming towns of the Netherlands and coastal Belgium. Visit the Clara Maria Cheese & Clog Farm or see De Haar - the largest castle in the Netherlands. Planning your car ride means you can take your time and travel at your own speed.
About Bruges
Bruges echoes the medieval architecture and picturesque canals of many towns along the Dutch and Belgian coasts. The view from your window as you travel from Amsterdam to Bruges will remind you that it truly is the тАЬVenice of the North.тАЭ Like Venice, Bruges emerged as a prominent trading hub in the 9th century. It flourished throughout the Middle Ages and was an important center of economic prosperity thanks to its strategic coastal location and bustling port.
Bruges was also the center of Flemish art and culture. It was home to many artists from the Flemish Primitives art movement, like Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling. You can visit the vast collection of art from this period at the Groeningemuseum. Another important cultural and religious landmark, the Basilica of the Holy Blood, holds a relic believed to be the blood of Christ. Pilgrims and visitors alike are drawn to its sacred ambiance and unique mix of Roman and Gothic architecture.
No matter what brings you to Bruges, this well-preserved medieval city is definitely beautiful fairytale stuff.
From Amsterdam to Bruges: Travel Tips
No matter how you cover the distance from Amsterdam to Bruges, follow these simple travel tips to make your trip go as smoothly as possible.
Border Crossing
The Amsterdam to Bruges route crosses country borders, but you likely won't have to stop or show an ID. Just in case, have your documents on you (and not packed up in the trunk!) and follow all posted signage when you approach the border.
Road Closures
If you're driving yourself, check for road closures and traffic before setting off. There are many alternative routes available in case of heavy traffic or construction. A detour into Ghent of Gouda may be just what your trip needs. Or make things even easier by riding with Daytrip. Your private driver will know the best way to get you to Bruges.
Tolls
Roads do not have tolls in the Netherlands, but driving through the Westerscheldetunnel along the A4/A29 route costs тВм5. In Belgium, only larger commercial vehicles (3.5+ tons) have to pay a toll.
How to get from Amsterdam to Bruges
Depending on your budget and preferences, you can choose from several travel options on how to get from Amsterdam to Bruges.
Amsterdam to Bruges by bus
It takes about 5 hours to get directly from Amsterdam to Bruges by bus. Tickets are between тВм15 and тВм30 and buses leave several times a day from multiple stations in Amsterdam.
Amsterdam to Bruges by train
There are no direct trains, but it is possible to change trains in Brussels and spend a few hours in BelgiumтАЩs capital. Without an extended layover in Brussels, expect the trip to take 7 hours.
Amsterdam to Bruges by car
The trip by car is 160 miles (260 km) and will take about 3 hours along the A4/A29 highways. Alternatively, the A2/A27 route will take you through Antwerp, a great city to add to your trip. While you wonтАЩt need a vignette, double-check that your rental's documentation is up to date and follow the speed limit. Bruges is small and has pedestrian-only areas, so make sure to have good GPS navigation.
Amsterdam to Bruges with Daytrip
For comfort and convenience, taking a private car with Daytrip is the best way to make the trip from Amsterdam to Bruges. Your private driver will take you door-to-door, so you donтАЩt have to worry about the intricacies of city driving or BrugesтАЩs pedestrian-only areas. Plus, the curated selection of sightseeing stops makes it easy to enrich your trip and experience more local culture.
Things to Do When You Get to Bruges
Once you arrive, there are plenty of things to do when you get to Bruges. As one of the worldтАЩs most famous fairytale towns, just getting around Bruges is a highlight.
Getting Around: Bike, Barge, and Boat
As you learned in Amsterdam, bikes and canals are the preferred modes of transit in this region. A bike is a great way to explore Bruges at your own pace, and since you probably didnтАЩt bike all the way from Amsterdam to Bruges you can rent a bike. A close second to biking is a barge or boat ride. The network of canals adds a distinctive charm and a fun way to get around.
Your trip wonтАЩt be complete without a visit to the Belfry of Bruges and Markt Square. The medieval Belfry of Bruges is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Climb its 366 steps, and you'll be rewarded with panoramic views across the UNESCO-listed historic center. The Markt (Market Square) hosts festivals, markets, and events throughout the year.
For a unique souvenir, consider handmade Bruges Lace. At the Kantcentrum, you can watch artisans make bobbin lace every afternoon (except Sundays and holidays).
Rainy Day Plans
Every trip needs a rainy day plan, especially in Belgium, where it rains an average of 200 days a year. Museums are a great way to immerse yourself in the vibrant arts scene while staying indoors. Bruges is no stranger to repurposing buildings: The Mu.ZEE museum is in an old department store, and the Museum Sint-Janshospitaal is in a medieval hospital complex. The Groeningemuseum is built on the remains of the Eekhout Abbey.

Brugge to Amsterdam via De Haar Castle
тАЬPerfect trip! The driver picked us up on-time (5 minutes early), helped with the luggage (we had 3 heavy bags) and drove us safely from Brugge to Amsterdam via our 2 hr stopover at De Haar Castle. Can not recommend him highly enough!!!тАЭ
Private Transfer Amsterdam to Bruges
тАЬOur transport was great. Effortless as it should be. Bernard B. was right on time and described some areas as we passed by. The car was spacious and clean. I would use your service again. Thank you CathyтАЭ
Great Daytrip Experience Belgium and France
тАЬGreat experience using Daytrip twice in Europe. Trip 1 Amsterdam to Bruges. Trip 2 Bruges to Paris. On both occasions we had the same driver Philippe who made the journey interesting, extremely comfortable and timely. We had a lovely 1 hour stop in Antwerp for the Bruges journey and a small snack break in Somme for the Paris trip. We changed our pick up time for the Paris trip but this was not an issue as we had requested the change more than 48 hours prior to pick up. I would highly recommend Daytrip (if you are willing to pay the premium) and you want seamless door to door service. It is also convenient if you have a bit more luggage but still want to make short stops to see some new sites along the way.тАЭ
тАЬAbsolutely best decision we have made this holiday! Company was quick to reply to emails. Niels Z Was a fantastic driver. There to collect us from our hotel early. He was great to chat to and very informative. We stopped in Gouda on the way through for a coffee and stretch our legsтАЭ
Airport pickup AMS to lodging in Brugge
тАЬWe chose to travel via Day Trip from Amsterdam airport to our apartment we were renting in Brugge. It totally took the stress out of going to the train station and making a change of trains in Brussels. It was Very pleasant carefee way to journey To Brugge that was an excellent choice. We had an extremely pleasant driver and was given a picture of him prior to the scheduled arrival. I highly recommend it!!!тАЭ
тАЬNiels from Daytrip was an incredible host and driver for us. He was extremely knowledgeable about the region, spoke excellent English, and provided great service and conversation. I would recommend Daytrip and Niels if anyone is planning on visiting Amsterdam and planning a day trip.тАЭ
тАЬThis is a review for a trip from Bruges to Amsterdam, we used Daytrip and the service was fantastic! The driver Sayed S.M. was early, and his driving skills were excellent. We felt safe, secure and never felt we we needed to watch the road etc. He drove us in a driving rainstorm when arriving to Amsterdam without any hesitation or concerns. I would highly recommend Sayed for any driving trips. His vehicle was comfortable and actually quite luxurious. He was friendly and very polite. I will recommend this company and service to anyone I can! for any trip anywhere. We will use Daytrip again.тАЭ
тАЬBecause of some illness, we were unable to take the train from Bruges to Amsterdam to catch our plane home. Went to Daytrip website, had a confirmation within 10 minutes for a driver the next day. Rauof was great: on time, friendly, even stopped for us twice when I was not feeling well. He was a life-saver, and the price was so reasonable.I can't recommend Daytrip highly enough. You should have 10 stars!тАЭ
Fantastically Stress-Free & Easy
тАЬI planned an Amsterdam -> Bruge -> Paris trip for my boyfriend for his birthday and wanted to make it as stress-free as possible for the both of us, which meant trying knocking out dealing with driving or confusion with trains. This was the absolute best service that made the trip efficient, easy, and worry-free to get us country to country. The drivers were always on time, if not early. They were easy-going and let us sleep during the ride, as well as included refreshments for the road. They checked in on us every now and then to ensure our comfort during the long journeys and made us feel very comfortable. The pricing is also completely worth its value. Top notch service, company, options, routes, and concept. Absolutely would recommend!!тАЭ
