Beglik Tash

The ancient Thracians used this natural stone formation as a religious sanctuary.

About

Even without context, Beglik Tash provides visitors with an unusual landscape. The giant boulders, rock formations, and stone cave provides a great place for nature lovers to explore. But the site’s history makes it even more interesting. Between 2000 BC, and around 300 AD, the Thracians used the site for religious and ritualistic purposes. A keen eye can still discern ancient etchings on the stones, and walking through the site, visitors will find a stone “marriage bed”, surrounded by two sacrificial stones, an astronomical clock, made of 16 flat round stones, and the “holy cave”. Said to be where the Mother Goddess gave birth to the Sun God, the dolmen’s position makes it the noonday sun illuminates the back of the cave - which is believed to symbolize fertilization.
