Germany
Built from local sandstone, this imposing medieval castle offers an intimate inside the lives of aristocrats - after all, some still live here.
First mentioned in 1020, Castle Bentheim’s exact origins have been lost in time. Over the centuries, the estate was rebuilt and expanded, gradually becoming one of the most impressive castles in the region. Behind its 5.5 meter thick sandstone walls, the noble family who lives here has opened their home to visitors. Here, visitors can see the the noble knights’ hall, the powder tower, and the macabre torture chamber. The Kronenburg wing, masterfully built in the Gothic style, is filled with spacious chambers and historic furnishings. Visitors can even join a torch-lit tour of the castle to fully immerse themselves in its long history. In May, the middle ages come to life as knights, knaves, and jesters gather ‘round the foot of the castle for the Bad Bentheim Knights’ Tournament.
