The contemporary settlement of Castillo de Teayo developed around an ancient pyramid, with its name meaning “on the stone turtle” in the Huastec language. The site served as a pivotal location between the expanding Aztec civilization from central Mexico and the Huaxtec Maya of the central Gulf of Mexico coast. Gaze in awe at the synthesis of Aztec influences with Huaxtec materials in its architectural style. The pyramid plaza houses stone sculptures portraying gods, animals, and human figures, which are exhibited in the museum on-site.
