Castillo de Teayo

A remarkable pre-Hispanic archaeological site and Mesoamerican pyramid sits in the La Huasteca region of northern Veracruz, Mexico.

About

The contemporary settlement of Castillo de Teayo developed around an ancient pyramid, with its name meaning “on the stone turtle” in the Huastec language. The site served as a pivotal location between the expanding Aztec civilization from central Mexico and the Huaxtec Maya of the central Gulf of Mexico coast. Gaze in awe at the synthesis of Aztec influences with Huaxtec materials in its architectural style. The pyramid plaza houses stone sculptures portraying gods, animals, and human figures, which are exhibited in the museum on-site. Visit the museum for a showcase of pre-Hispanic objects from the Veracruz northern region, providing insights into inhabitants of the Castillo de Teayo. Among the notable stone sculptures is the “Stone of Corn”, an enormous monolith discovered near the Teayo temple. Uncover this and more at the incredible Castillo de Teayo.
