This striking medieval castle has preserved 700 years worth of lavish lifestyles.

About

Chirk Castle was built in 1295 by Roger Mortimer de Chirk to help support King Edward I's chain of fortresses across northern Wales. Visitors can see the medieval dungeons, and eccentric, era-spanning state rooms, including the 17th-century Long Gallery, stupendous 18th-century saloon, and 1920s style ‘Bow Room’, where the castle’s connections to high society are on display. The castle’s 5.5 acre gardens are renowned for their manicured lawns, clipped yews, and beautiful rose, shrub and rock gardens, culminating in a terrace overlooking the 18th century ha-ha and the Cheshire and Salop plains.
