Bermuda
This fortified stronghold, established in the 1870s, stands proudly on Scaur Hill of Somerset Island and will treat you to sweeping vistas of Bermuda’s Great Sound and the Royal Naval Dockyard.
Fort Scaur, also known as Scaur Hill Lines and Somerset Lines, is nestled within 22 acres of parkland, offering meandering paths and inviting picnic spots. Built in response to apprehensions of invasion, this formidable fort features towering ramparts that once held formidable 64-pound cannons. Today, the fort serves as the centerpiece of this inviting park, offering visitors a chance to explore its gun emplacements and chambers. The renovated moat now blooms as a vibrant floral garden, and the ramparts provide unparalleled views of the Dockyard and the Great Sound. The paths weave through Bermuda Cedar groves, resonating with the melodies of Kiskadees and sightings of Jamaican Anole lizards. Some trails interconnect with the Bermuda Railway Trail, an inviting expedition into the tranquil countryside of Sandys Parish. The property is open daily from 10AM to 4:30PM.
