Italy
This massive medieval fortress became synonymous with family feuds, but Dante turned it into a symbol of love.
On a hill overlooking the Adriatic Sea on one side and valleys on the other, this 11th century castle’s strategic position made it one of the main theaters for the turbulent feuds between the Malatesta and Montefeltro families. This long-standing conflict came to a halt only after the control of the castle fell into the hands of the Sforza family. Peace at the castle could also be partly ascribed to Dante, who made it the setting for the tale of Paolo and Francesca, forever turning it into a symbol of love. Today, the complete castle complex is a museum, filled with paintings, furniture and other period artefacts, like clothing. Be sure to walk the wall to enjoy the panoramic views of the Italian countryside.
