Puerto Rico

Guayama

Named for their enduring superstitions, there are some enchanting cultural gems to be found in this oft-overlooked seaside city.

About

Founded by the Spanish in 1736, Guayama sometimes gets written off as an industrial city. But head to the main square and you’ll find a rich cultural nucleus. The main landmark is the 19th century Iglesia Católica San Antonio de Padua, the old city hall, historic theaters, and the enchanting Casa Cautiño. This neoclassical abode, ornamented with Puerto Rican flourishes, is now a house-museum filled with 19th century art, sculptures, and furniture made by Puerto Rican craftsmen. For lit-lovers, don’t miss the Casa y Museo del Poeta Luis Palés Matos, the former home of the poet who invented Afro-Antillian poetry. Even if you have no interest in history or architecture, there’s another reason Guayama is famous throughout Puerto Rico: La Casa de los Pastelillos. Grab some of the largest deep-fried empanadas on the island and dig in right on the white sand beach.
