Halle

This picturesque medieval city with its iconic towered-landmarks was the birthplace of the composer Handel.

About

Founded around the 9th century, Halle was an important trade city for centuries. In the 18th century, the city became a center for Pietism, which saw the city filled with orphanages, and the first ‘modern’ education system. One of the city’s iconic ‘Five Towers’ comes courtesy of the Red Tower, home to the world’s third largest carillon. The other 4 towers rise above the Church of St. Mary, where Handel used to play organ - an instrument christened under the keen ear of Johann Sebastian Bach. Nearby, the Renaissance building where Handel was born now serves as a museum dedicated to the great composer. In the Museum of Prehistory, home to one of Germany’s most important archaeological collections, visitors will find artefacts from the Stone Age through early Iron Age, including the famous Nebra Sky Disk, a UNESCO-protected artefact labelled as one of the most important finds of the 20th century.
