Hiyare Reservoir

Take a break at this restful reservoir and walk through a rainforest filled with rare flora and fauna.

About

The Hiyare Reservoir was built approximately 100 years ago to supply drinking water to Galle. Now it’s a recreation area, where you can unwind and take in soothing vistas of the calm water and adjacent rainforest. If you want to stretch your legs, the surrounding rainforest is renowned for having one of the highest concentrations of rare and endemic species in the world! Despite covering an area of just 600 acres (243 hectares), the rainforest is home to flora and fauna including the mischievous mongoose, the rare hog deer, and amazingly, 55 species of dragonfly! Walk through the vibrant rainforest and you will come across the biodiversity research center where an animal rescue programme is helping to heal and reintroduce injured animals. If you are a nature lover you will be in paradise exploring this serene and unspoilt gem. Entrance tickets are not included in our price and must be purchased separately at the site.
