Hospital Notre Dame de la Rose Museum

In use for over 700 years, the stately halls of one of Belgium’s oldest hospitals is now a museum dedicated to its rich history.

About

Founded in 1242, the Hospital Notre Dame de la Rose tended to Lessines sickly and impoverished for centuries. Of the many autarkic hospitals founded in the Middle Ages, Notre Dame de la Rose is one of the last that have preserved the farm, gardens, cooler, and cemetery, along with the conventual and hospital buildings. After its last patient in the 1980s, the hospital was made into a museum for visitors to marvel at the many artistic, historical, and medical treasures it accrued through the centuries. In the basement, visitors will find a model of the building as it looked in its hospital days, alongside fascinating archaeological finds, such as a statue of the hospital’s founder. The rest of the picturesque complex is filled with historic artwork and furniture, centuries-old medical and surgical tools, a library with over 3,000 books, and an entire section dedicated to the nuns who devoted themselves to helping the sick and dying.
