Iceland
This charming town serves as a gateway to the Reykjadalur Valley’s hot springs.
Hveragerdi and the nearby Reykjadalur Valley are part of the Hengill geothermal area - a vast volcanic system that provides most of Reykjavik’s hot water and electricity. Hiking through Reykjadalur (literally “Steam Valley”), you’re treated to a variety of geothermal features including steam vents and bubbling mud cauldrons, with a gorgeous waterfall thrown in for good measure. But the main attraction is bathing in the so-called “hot river”. This stream is naturally heated by the hot springs that feed it, making it a popular destination for daytrips from the capital. After about an hour-long hike, you reach the wooden boardwalk with partitioned changing zones that marks the bathing area (many of the other springs aren’t suitable for bathing - pay attention to the signs!). After you’ve changed into your bathing suit, hop in and enjoy the valley’s natural beauty while bathing in a heated river - just don’t forget a towel!
