Ieud Hill Church

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the oldest wooden churches in Europe, and filled with amazing murals.

About

Built around 1620, Ieud Hill Church is one of the oldest wooden churches in Europe, and one of only a few surviving tradition wooden churches in Maramureş. The church’s rustic Gothic architectural style is distinguished from Ieud’s other wooden church by its distinctive Orthodox influences. Along with its beautiful architecture, the entire interior of the church is covered with marvellous murals, which are considered the best-preserved in Maramureş, and unique in that they include Cyrillic and Roman characters. The church also helped preserve Romanian culture - in 1921, the codex of Ieud, the oldest document written in the Romanian language, was found under its roof. While in town, it’s also worth a visit to Ieud’s other church, which houses the largest collection of painted glass icons in Maramureş.
