IWM Duxford

The history of flight comes alive at Britain’s largest aviation museum, where visitors can step inside the Concord, or see Spitfires take to the skies.

About

The International War Museum in Duxford has deep roots in aviation - it was established as a World War I aerodrome, and its renowned pilots were the first to receive the Spitfire and Typhoon fighters during World War II. On D-Day, the base launched every available fighter to assist with the invasion at Normandy. Duxford continued to serve as a RAF base until 1961, and was reopened as the International War Museum in 1977. Today, the site is home to a vast collection of aircraft, tanks, military vehicles, and naval exhibits. Along with iconic British aircraft like the Spitfire and Lancaster, visitors will also find an entire American collection, which includes the famed SR-71 Blackbird and A-10 Thunderbolt, and fascinating exhibitions covering everything from the Burma Campaign to aircraft restoration. Visitors can even step inside some of the larger aircraft, or watch (and hear) historic fighters fly by - there’s even the opportunity to take a flight yourself!
