Bulgaria
This ancient fortress was a stalwart defender of Bulgaria.
According to archaeological studies, the mighty fortress of Krakra was founded in the 6th century BC, but it would be 1500 years before it would make a name for itself. In the early 11th century, the Byzantine's tried to take the fortress, and failed. The nearby rocks are said to have been stained red by their blood. It was solely thanks to this might bastion that the nearby town of Pernik was thus spared from destruction. Today, visitors can see the ancient structure and its impressive thick walls, while the well-preserved foundations of dwellings, churches, and the basilica tell a tale of the more day-to-day life of the previous inhabitants.
