Lake Nyinambuga

Surrounded by lush forest, this picturesque lake is featured on the back of the 20,000 shilling note.

About

Lake Nyinambuga is one of a series of lakes formed from violent volcanic activity that reshaped the region around 10,000 BC. This relatively remote area on the fringe of the Kibale National Park sees few travellers, and even Ugandans from outside the area have difficulty pronouncing the lakes’ tribal names. Lake Nyinambuga is something of an obscure national monument, being featured on the back of the 20,000 shilling note, though the orange-ish pink print doesn’t convey the beauty of the bright blue waters surrounded by verdant green jungle. The walking trail through the forest around the lake not only offers some great vantage points, but the chance to see primates like monkeys and baboons, as well as a number of native birds.
