Leszno

Privately owned for centuries, this town opened their doors to refugees of local wars, helping it reach the same status as Poland’s major cities.

About

Founded around the 13th century, the town was owned by the same family from around 1393 until 1738 when King Stanisław Leszczyński sold it. During this time, the hospitable Leszczyński welcomed refugees from nearby areas, bolstering the town’s esteem. Today, the town offers visitors a slew of historic buildings, such as the 17th century Calvanist church, and Baroque town hall, situated in a broad square. The district museum, housed in two historic tenement buildings, exhibits the town history through a variety of artefacts, ranging from paintings to clocks and medicine. The old Synagogue, a reminder of the town’s Jewish population who were relocated or killed during World War II, is now a community center and art space.
